There wasn’t a great deal to watch in the recent Champions League game between Manchester United and Marseille, but at least the Old Trafford management team were able to watch one of their prospective transfer targets up close.
According to various media reports the Ghana star Andre Ayew is under the United sides microscope. Ayew has also been watched by a few other teams and interest in the player is thought to be high.
The French born Ghanaian spent the early part of his career playing in his native country for Nania FC…presumably with a witch and a wardrobe. He only played at youth level for the team before he eventually moved to France and joined the youth academy at Marseille. Ayew soon broke into the first team and not long into his time at the club the player was the subject of a £5million bid from Arsenal which Marseille rejected.
He spent the next 2 years on loan at different French sides gaining first time experience, first in Ligue 2 and latterly back in the top flight of the French leagues with Arles-Avignon. After a successful season there Marseille manager Didier Deschamps announced that the winger would be an important part of the team for this season, as a commitment to the player he was offered a new 3 year contract which runs until 2014. He has indeed become an important member of the side, featuring in 30 games in all competitions this term.
The player is predominantly a left winger who can also play down the right if required, he has also appeared up front numerous times for both his club and country. He is quick and a good dribbler and will undoubtedly cause problems to opposition defences in the Premier League. He is known for the passion he shows, and he never seems to give up and tries to motivate his team mates to do the same. The United hierarchy will be keeping a close eye on the player during the 2nd leg of their Champions League tie.
If Sir Alex Ferguson is to bid for the player this Summer he will face competition from Parma, Sampdoria and Palermo and there is also the suggestion that Premiership rivals Arsenal may want to renew their interest in the player. A bid from United is thought to be dependent on how the player performs for the rest of the season, but if he does well, it is thought that an offer will follow.
His power and pace could be a real asset to United from wide areas and his performance against United in the first leg of their European game has been acknowledged by the Old Trafford chief, after the game he said:
”Ayew played a great game, he defended and Nani was unable to pass through. He spent a lot of energy and really played a good game.”

The hard working nature of his game would suggest that he would be of great benefit in English football, a willing player with speed and skills, he would be a good solid signing for United should it be something they wish to pursue. It this one were to ultimately happen, it would possibly mark the end of Gabriel Obertan’s stay at Old Trafford as he would slip further from the first team after failing to impress in his spell at Old Trafford.
