Manchester United are interested in signing CSKA Moscow’s 17-year-old Serbian centre back Uros Cosic – a youngster so talented that sources in his homeland are already declaring him as potentially a bigger talent than Nemanja Vidic.
United’s £7 million capture of Vidic from CSKA’s local rivals Spartak Moscow didn’t make many headlines at the time with the player relatively unknown in England, but Cosic is already making a name for himself around the world despite being a lot younger. Vidic has gone on to prove himself to be one of the best defenders in the Premiership so it’s scary to think just how good Cosic could be if he turns out to be what the Serbians are proclaiming.
Naturally CSKA are desperate to keep hold of the youngster – so much so that they’ve asked the president to grant him Russian citizenship so he doesn’t count as a foreign player in their squad. CSKA president Yevgeny Giner is quoted in the Daily Mirror as saying
“I must stress that we would like to keep Cosic. We even offered him Russian citizenship. It now depends upon the President Medvedev whether it is granted or not. I have not seen such a great central defender before, not to mention that he is only 17 but Manchester United would also love to have him.”
“They have already made several attempts to approach me about him, asking if I was ready to negotiate. They can see the boy is going to grow into a bigger star than Vidic.”
