Garay has previously played for Newell’s Old Boys back in his home nation of Argentina after 13 first team appearances he moved to Racing Santander of the Spanish Primera Liga. He really made a name for himself at Santander with tidy displays that caught the attention of Real Madrid and in 2008 they signed the young Argentinian.
Kjaer began his career at FC Midtjylland in Denmark where his performances saw him win the Danish u19 talent of the year award. He attracted the attention of Liverpool and Middlesbrough and Real Madrid had a bid turned down. In February 2008, Italian club Palermo agreed a deal with FC Midtjylland to take the young Dane to Italy and he joined them in July.
Garay has found himself out of favour at the Bernabeau stadium with Pepe, Raul Albiol, Metzelder and Sergio Ramos all preferred ahead of him at center back. Real Madrid have reportedly offered the defender to Manchester for United for a knock down price of £6m but with Pepe picking up a long term injury he may see himself back in the first team picture.
Kjaer is an integral part of Palermo’s defence and his performances have seen him attract attention from a number of Italian and European clubs. Palermo do not wish to sell the £11m rated defender but sitting in 13th and and a Uefa Cup spot looking like a long shot, he may just move on.
Garay is an accomplished defender. He is tidy and can also play at right back. He has an eye for goal and is known to score quite a few set pieces. In 06/07 he netted 9 goals and although most came from the penalty spot, he can also score freekicks. His physical presence is alway felt when he plays, good in the air, reads the game excellently and has great distribution. He was touted as a future world beater but his career has somewhat stalled at Madrid.
Kjaer is a natural athlete, tall and strong. He is well built and often puts his size to use with tough tackles and great aerial command. What is impressive is his positional awareness and that at such a young age he is already a natural leader. He isn’t exactly fast and technical ability can be improved but at 20 he has years to learn.
Both players would be great signings, Garay would cost less and is probably the better of the two at the moment but Kjaer has more potential. I think United would be looking to sign someone more established rather than someone who would be learning on the job so in that case, it would appear Garay would be the favourite.
