Manchester City supporters have been in fine voice in the Transfer Tavern so far this season given their team’s incredible start to the campaign, which got a whole lot better on Sunday as the Citizens edged Huddersfield Town 2-1 to maintain their eight-point lead at the top of the Premier League.
Pep Guardiola’s men were tipped by many during pre-season to go and win the title this term, and they have certainly lived up to the favourite’s tag by winning 12 of their opening 13 league games, although their most recent was arguably their toughest yet. A Nicolas Otamendi own goal gave the Terriers a shock first half lead, although goals from Sergio Aguero and Raheem Sterling, the latter somewhat fortunate, gave the North West side all three points to remain eight points clear of second place Manchester United, at the same time extending their winning run in all competitions to 18 games.
Thus, there have been many delighted City fans in the Tavern so far this season, although they may be somewhat unnerved by a recent report from Don Balon (via The Manchester Evening News), which suggests that European champions Real Madrid are eyeing up a move for striker Sergio Aguero.
The 29-year-old made the move to the Etihad Stadium back in 2011 and has since gone on to become one of the best strikers in the Premier League with an incredible 131 goals in just 190 league games for City, in which time he has helped them to two titles.
And with 180 goals in 267 matches in all competitions for the Citizens, the Argentina international has certainly proven his worth to the club in the last six years, and looks set to play a huge part in their quest for a third Premier League title this time round.
However, reports suggest that Zinedine Zidane’s Real are lining up a move for the striker in January in a bid to kick-start their season, with Alexis Sanchez’s possible move to the Etihad reportedly opening the door for the Spanish side’s advances.
But whether City would consider selling, or indeed whether Aguero would want to leave the club, very much remains to be seen.
Landlord’s verdict: About ten months ago, Gabriel Jesus made such a wonderful start to life at Manchester City that the future of now-club record goal-scorer Sergio Aguero was hugely uncertain.
Yet nine goals in just nine Premier League games so far this term, as well as 20 last time round, has all but banished any concerns about the 29-year-old’s desire to remain at the club, although it hasn’t stopped speculation building regarding a possible move in the future.
And with Alexis Sanchez possibly on his way to the Etihad Stadium in January, European champions Real Madrid are reportedly seeking to lure Aguero to the Bernabeu should the Gunners man move to the North West, which would certainly give Pep Guardiola something to think about in the New Year.
Ultimately, Aguero remains as lethal and as prolific as ever in front of goal, thus losing him in January could put a serious dent in their Premier League title ambitions.
