Everton eased the pressure on under-fire manager Marco Silva as they beat Watford 2-0 in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup with one player flying under the radar for the Merseysiders.
Silva’s side were made to wait for their win with Mason Holgate opening the scoring in the 72nd minute of the game after a cross from Theo Walcott.
It was all plain sailing from there as Richarlison ensured victory deep into stoppage time after he finished off a counter-attacking move thanks to a pass from Cenk Tosun.
Holgate proved the star of the show for the Blues as he capped off a brilliant defensive display with a crucial goal for his under-fire manager. The 22-year-old won the second-most aerial duels and made the joint-second most clearances as he helped keep the Hornets at bay (via WhoScored).
However, it is Alex Iwobi who continues to impresses after grabbing two goals and an assist in his first 10 games for his new club. The Nigeria international was doing his best to create chances for Everton, completing a mass four more dribbles than his next highest teammate. In total, he attempted five, completing all of them.
In terms of passing, Iwobi also outshone his teammates, especially in the final third where he played more than 50% of his 44 passes.
The Liverpool Echo were also left impressed as they gave Iwobi a six out of 10, commenting on his ever-improving nature during the game.
They said: “Another who clearly improved after the half time interval. Beforehand he was struggling to get into the game and couldn’t create chances, but the introduction of Walcott seemed to open up a lot more space for the fellow former Arsenal man to work and he looked a lot more like himself as the match wore on.” (Source: Liverpool Echo)
