Liverpool fought back after conceding in the first minute to beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 with one player having a point to prove.
Harry Kane gave the north London side a shock lead inside 48 seconds after great play from Heung-Min Son down the left-hand side (via BBC). After Son smacked the woodwork, Kane stooped low to head in from just yards out.
Jordan Henderson restored parity early in the second half with a strike from just inside the box. Jurgen Klopp’s men were then awarded a penalty after a ‘dumb’ foul from Serge Aurier on Sadio Mane, with Mohamed Salah dispatching for the winning goal.
Jordan Henderson proved to be the heartbeat of the midfield with his mix of attacking and defending proving vital. He attempted the joint-most dribbles and the second-most tackles for Liverpool as he proved to be more than just a defensive midfielder (via WhoScored).
Fabinho certainly picked right up where he left off from against Genk with another impressive performance yesterday. His ability on and off the ball shone through, as he attempted the second-most passes and the most tackles.
However, it was Dejan Lovren, whose display proved to be effective yet not very eye-opening for many. Klopp stopped the Croatia international from leaving the club in the summer and fans may just be beginning to understand why after yesterday.
Lovren made five of the side’s eight clearances and wasn’t dispossessed once as he looked to shake off the ‘unreliable’ tag he seems to have acquired at Anfield.
The Guardian also seemed to be impressed as they gave Lovren a seven out of 10.
They said: “Lost out to Son in a foot race that almost led to a second Spurs goal but otherwise solid.” (Source: The Guardian)
Klopp must be rubbing his hands with glee after Lovren’s performance yesterday as he looks to compete alongside Joel Matip for the starting spot alongside Virgil van Dijk.
