Unsung Hero: Eight aerials won for Kortney Hause in vital performance against rivals

Former Wolves academy player Kortney Hause put in a stellar performance on Wednesday night as Aston Villa overcame their local rivals to win 2-1 in the EFL Cup.

While Ahmed Elmohamady, Henri Lansbury and Anwar El Ghazi are likely to take the plaudits after their goals and assists, a dominating performance at the back from Kortney Hause laid the foundations for Aston Villa to put themselves into the final eight of the competition.

Two assists for Lansbury and goals from Elmohamady and El Ghazi saw Villa overcome a young Wolves side, which is hardly surprising given the extra minutes in the Europa League.

Hause, 24, won eight aerials throughout the match – five more than anyone else in the Villa side. The aerial duels won were particularly important due to the way in which Wolves were playing throughout the match. They only had 28.6 per cent possession, therefore, were playing long throughout, and Hause was able to answer any question asked of him (stats from WhoScored).

The defender also contributed one tackle and an interception, getting given a 7.07/10 by WhoScored’s algorithm – higher than anyone else in the Villa defence.

Who should start at left-back for Aston Villa, Neil Taylor or Matt Targett?

With Engels and Mings starting every league match this season, Hause has had to settle for a role solely in the EFL Cup (Transfermarkt), which he has played every minute of so far.

Hause has played well when given a chance this season despite not making one Premier League matchday squad. However, his fortunes could be changing as Dean Smith told the club website that he – amongst some other fringe players – are pushing for places now within the current squad.

He said to the Villa website: “I’m pleased the likes of him [Henry Lansbury], Ezri and Kortney have all got minutes today and are pushing for places now.”

If Hause can keep on putting in performances like that in the EFL Cup, then he has a real chance of knocking on the first-team door at Villa or even look an attractive prospect to other clubs.
