Southampton came from a goal behind to rescue a point against Manchester United on Saturday afternoon, and while defender Jannik Vestergaard will be rightfully showered with praise after a solid performance defensively and well-taken goal at the other end, it is his centre-back partner who quietly stood out at St Mary’s.
Jan Bednarek received an overall rating of 7/10 from WhoScored for his performance against United, after he made a total of three tackles and eight clearances for his side against an extremely quick Red Devils front-line.
The Poland international remained solid at the back but was also composed when he had possession, registering a pass completion rate of 76.5%, which compared to Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s 66% shows just what a promising performance he put in.
“Solid enough display,” the Daily Mirror wrote as they gave Bednarek a respectable 6 in their match ratings.
United initially took the lead through Daniel James, as the Welshman fired a powerful shot into the top-corner of Angus Gunn’s net in the 10th minute. The defending from Southampton should have been better, with right-back Cedric Soares simply allowing the 21-year-old far too much time to cut inside and get a shot away.
The Saints hit back with just 15 minutes remaining, though, after Kevin Danso found Jannik Vestergaard with a perfectly-weighted cross at the back post. The ginormous Dane rose above Victor Lindelof to nod home the equaliser, but there were to be no more goals as the game finished 1-1.
Danso, provider of Southampton’s goal, was then sent off for a poor challenge on United midfielder Scott McTominay, ensuring a nervy end for the hosts as they dealt with a late onslaught of pressure from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.
After looking weak at the back in previous weeks having conceded three goals in their opener against Burnley, the Saints are showing signs of improvement, with Bednarek and Vestergaard starting to form a solid relationship in the heart of Ralph Hasenhuttl’s back-line.
