Jetro Willems produced a brilliant display as Newcastle United drew 1-1 against Wolves on Sunday. We have taken a closer look at his performance against the West Midlands club in the latest edition of our Unsung Hero feature.
Newcastle United’s frustrating start to the 2019/20 season continued on Sunday as they could only claim a 1-1 draw against Wolves (via BBC Sport).
The Magpies had taken the lead thanks to Jamaal Lascelles in the first half, but Jonny Otto’s strike in the second period ensured that Nuno Espirito Santo’s side came away from St. James’ Park with a point.
Despite the result, there were some positives for Newcastle and one of those was the performance of left-back Jetro Willems.
The Dutchman was outstanding on the day, and the statistics certainly back that statement up. Indeed, he won two aerial duels, played one key pass, made three successful dribbles, six successful tackles and one clearance and also blocked one shot in an action packed 90 minutes (via WhoScored).
All of that led to him receiving a WhoScored match rating of 7.77, which was the highest of any player on the pitch.
Willems signed for the Magpies in the summer, arriving from Eintracht Frankfurt on a season-long loan (via Sky Sports).
He has been a regular for Steve Bruce, featuring in eight games in all competitions so far. Despite being a left-back he has already contributed with one goal and two assists, whilst also helping the side to two clean sheets (WhoScored).
His performances have been one of a few positives for the Tyneside club this season, and his display against Wolves certainly deserves some recognition. He has shown that he can help the team defensively, but also has the ability to get forward and be involved with creating and scoring goals.
Newcastle will need him to maintain those standards in the next few weeks as they look to keep themselves out of the relegation zone.
Should Newcastle sign Jetro Willems permanently?
