Southampton lost 3-1 to Manchester City in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup as they looked to recover from their 9-0 battering at the hands of Leicester City, with one player proving valiant in his performance.
Nicolas Otamendi opened the scoring in the 20th minute after he was allowed a free header following a cross from Bernardo Silva.
Sergio Aguero followed his international teammate when he scored the second City goal after he was offered the freedom of the penalty box to turn in a Kyle Walker cutback.
Aguero then scored his second of the evening when he put the ball through the legs of Alex McCarthy after Riyadh Mahrez’s deflected strike.
Indeed, it was another disappointing night for the Saints. However, that did not stop £13.5m-rated Hojbjerg (via Transfermarkt) from putting in a valiant performance for the south coast side as he looked to defy City and their dominance.
Playing in an unfamiliar left-wing back role, the Dane stood as tall as he could to the juggernaut that is the Citizens. He won the most tackles (8), the most interceptions and made the joint-second most clearances as he put in a monstrous defensive shift (via WhoScored).
The Independent also took some pleasure in Hojbjerg’s performance as they gave the Denmark international a six out of 10, the joint-second highest among Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men (via The Independent).
Tasks don’t get any easier for the side as they travel back up to Manchester to once again take on Pep Guardiola’s men in the Premier League on Saturday.
Should Ralph Hasenhuttl be under pressure at Southampton?
