The Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern are looking forward to a summer of change, both on the field and off of it. With Arsene Wenger set to leave, it seems likely that whoever comes in will bring with them a lot of alterations, both in terms of personnel and in terms of tactics.
It’s pretty unclear who will handle the transfers at Arsenal this summer, particularly until new management comes in, but that doesn’t mean that their problems can be put off any longer.
Indeed, the Gunners need to make a quick start this summer if they are to have any chance of regaining their prominence in the Premier League, and they need to fix a few problem areas in the squad.
Undoubtedly, Arsenal’s major problem area at the moment is at the back – and particularly in the heart of the defence. Shkodran Mustafi’s mixed form has been well documented, the likes of Calum Chambers and Rob Holding are not yet at their best, and not even Laurent Koscielny is not the player that he once was.
Clearly, then, this summer, a new central defensive acquisition could make all the difference. Defensive errors and mistakes at the back have cost Arsenal big this season, and many of their problems can simply be put down to poor form at the back.
Whoever does handle the transfers, then, must prioritise bringing in a new defender, and there are a few avenues that they can take.
In the Premier League, a bold move for Kurt Zouma could make sense, given that he’s spent the year on loan away from Chelsea this season, or perhaps even a move for Jonny Evans could provide a short-term fix at the Emirates. Outside of the Premier League, it’s likely to come down to whoever comes in to manage Arsenal’s experience. For example, a coach with a history in the Italian league may prefer some Italian strength and aerial dominance over a more technical Spanish style. In the case of the former, perhaps a move for someone like Roma’s Kostas Manolas could be a good option, whilst in the case of the latter, Inigo Martinez of Athletic Bilbao would provide solid cover.
Whether the Gunners make the decision to upgrade the defence remains to be seen, but in the opinion of our landlord, it needs to be a priority.
