It’s been a strange season for Everton. The Toffees started off very poorly under Ronald Koeman, and whilst Sam Allardyce has steadied the ship, the Goodison Park faithful are arguably even more frustrated under the Englishman.
Big Sam, as he is affectionately known, hasn’t built a career on attractive football, despite his success, and it seems that for some Everton fans, the style that their side adheres to is equally important, if not more so, than the substance.
However, whilst fans may not want to hear it, Everton have bigger things to worry about this summer beyond the negative nature of their playstyle.
There are a few big problems within the Everton squad that simply must be sorted this summer, and there’s an argument to suggest that the one that needs sorting more than any other is at left-back.
Leighton Baines has been a fantastic servant for the club, but at 33-years-old, it’s clear that the Englishman’s days are numbered. When looking at his mixed form and poor recent injury record, Baines needs to be replaced, and this summer, it should be priority number one for Everton.
Having strong wing play is crucial to any team, and it’s particularly so for more of a route-one team like Allardyce’s, and so bringing in a new face could be huge for Everton.
It certainly won’t be easy for them, particularly to replace a player like Baines, but they’ve got to try.
In terms of options, perhaps someone like Ryan Bertrand – particularly if Southampton end up getting relegated – could be a good signing, whilst a move for someone like Alex Telles of Porto could be more of a decent offensive option if that what Allardyce wants.
Either way, this move must be a priority for Everton.
