The Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern are feeling pretty good about their squad at the moment. It has been a real season of progression for Jurgen Klopp’s men, and regardless of how it ends, it’s fair to say that they’ve really grown as a club.
However, despite the fact that Klopp has built a fantastic team, improvement is still needed. They need to continue to evolve if they are to challenge for the Premier League title, and so a new signing or two needs to come in this summer.
They have, of course, got Naby Keita coming in to improve the midfield, but our landlord doesn’t think that the work should stop there. Indeed, he thinks that the Reds need to bring in a new forward too.
Make no mistake, in Roberto Firmino, Liverpool have one of Europe’s best strikers. His incredible technical ability makes him unique in the context of the Premier League, and whilst most attackers are known for their goalscoring pedigree, the Brazilian has more strings to his bow than just that. His incredible range of passing, dribbling and moving makes him a real asset going forward, making it far easier for other players to get involved. It’s fair to say that Mohamed Salah wouldn’t have had such a good season if Firmino wasn’t in the team.
However, he can’t be expected to lead the line every single week. Klopp needs variety, both in terms of personnel in general and in terms of individual playing style. However, at present, beyond Firmino, the Reds have little choice. Dominic Solanke isn’t ready, Danny Ings’ fitness problems are well documented, and beyond that duo, Klopp has to turn to unfamiliar faces.
This summer, then, bringing in a new striker should be priority number one.
In terms of options, domestically he could even look at someone like Jamie Vardy, who has proven his worth as a top English Premier League forward. If he wants to aim bigger, perhaps someone like Mauro Icardi – who has been sensational in Serie A this season – or maybe Ciro Immobile, who likewise has had a great campaign, would be a good fit. Europe is packed full of attacking talent, and Liverpool should try and get a piece of the action.
If they want to challenge at the top, they need more options.
