Things couldn’t have gone much better for the Man City fans in the Transfer Tavern this season. The Citizens have enjoyed a remarkable rise under Pep Guardiola, and if they have a good summer, that could continue for a few years yet.
Fortunately for Guardiola, there aren’t many issues that need solving. Their squad is arguably the best we’ve seen in some time in England, but that doesn’t mean that improvements can’t be made.
Indeed, one area that certainly needs to be invested in is in the heart of the midfield.
The Man City squad is full of incredible attacking talent, and much of that has been balanced out by Fernandinho this season. However, he can’t be expected to control that position for another year on his own, and so investment will be crucial.
He’s one of the unsung heroes of this team, and without him, they’d likely fall apart. An incredibly hard worker, the Brazilian provides enough defensive quality to cover for the several more offensive players ahead of him.
Bringing in a player to compete with, and eventually replace him, then, won’t be easy. They need to have several brilliant traits. They need to be a good tackler, naturally, but they also need to have a great engine, whilst a decent range of passing and fantastic mobility are also important qualities.
Fortunately, there are several players in Europe that would fit the bill perfectly. Wilfred Ndidi of Leicester City would be a decent choice, and a year learning from Fernandinho could turn him into the N’Golo Kante-esque player that we all know he can be. If experience is what Guardiola wants, though, maybe Fabinho of Monaco would be a good choice, as he’s a very similar player to Fernandinho.
Given Man City’s financial muscle, they shouldn’t have to many issues affording a top player, but it will be interesting to see who they go for.
