Improvements are needed at Chelsea this summer, that much is painfully clear. The Blues have struggled for much of the season, and another poor campaign next term could see them slip down the table even more – especially if the teams around them continue to improve.
With Antonio Conte’s future still uncertain, Roman Abramovich seems a likely candidate to take over much of the Blues’ transfer business this summer, and he has a few major problems to fix.
However, the one position that the Blues need to prioritise this summer is in the heart of the defence.
Naturally, central defence – especially when utilising three central defenders as part of a back five – is the foundation of the team, and issues in the position can prevent a performance from even getting started.
Fortunately for Chelsea, in Andreas Christensen, they have the perfect successor to David Luiz, whilst Cesar Azpilicueta has also been as solid as ever this term. That third spot, though, is less certain – not to mention the fact that Azpilicueta is actually more naturally suited to a position on the flanks. With Gary Cahill no longer the player that he once was, and age beginning to catch up to him, and with Antonio Rudiger yet to truly settle at Stamford Bridge – bringing in a new central defender makes sense.
Chelsea need to prioritise the position, most certainly, and although it won’t be easy, there are a few solutions for Abramovich.
They could bring back Kurt Zouma, who impressed at Stamford Bridge prior to suffering a knee injury, given that he has looked good on loan at Stoke City. They could also look away from Stamford Bridge, with Premier League defenders like Jamaal Lascelles or Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld both good choices. Looking away from England, perhaps someone like Kalidou Koulibaly – who has had a great season in Italy – may be a good choice.
It won’t be easy for the Blues, but bringing in a new central defender this summer should be a priority.
