Everton fans in the Transfer Tavern were again left to bemoan a poor performance from their side after seeing the Toffees only draw 1-1 at Brighton, leaving them just two places above the Premier League’s bottom three after another frustrating day on the pitch.
Ronald Koeman’s men went into their clash at the AMEX Stadium on Sunday having won just two of their seven league games, and they looked set for a fourth league defeat of the campaign when Anthony Knockaert gave Chris Hughton’s men the lead eight minutes from time after Morgan Schneiderlin failed to clear the danger.
However, the Toffees secured a precious point when Wayne Rooney converted from the penalty spot in the final minute of the match, sealing an eighth point of the campaign in what was their eighth encounter, a tally which leaves them in the lowly position of 16th in the division.
Nonetheless, there may be some encouragement for our suffering resident Everton supporters, as a recent report from Portuguese newspaper Record (via The Liverpool Echo) suggests that the Merseyside outfit are lining up a January move for Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho.
The 25-year-old came up through the ranks at the Portuguese heavyweights and has since gone on to play 162 games for the club, bagging ten goals and laying on 14 assists in the process.
And his future was subject to much speculation over the summer, what with West Ham reportedly close to sealing a deal for the Portugal Euro 2016 winner, only for a move to break down for one reason or another.
And now it seems that Everton are keeping tabs on Carvalho and are indeed looking at launching a €35 million bid for the midfielder, in a bid to bolster their own ranks in the middle following a sluggish start to the season from duo Schneiderlin and Idrissa Gueye.
But whether they do indeed firm up their interest with an offer in the New Year very much remains to be seen.
Landlord’s verdict: William Carvalho’s proposed move to West Ham became one of the most drawn-out transfer sagas of the summer, and eventually resulted in no move for the midfielder for one reason or another.
However, that doesn’t appear to be putting Everton off though, as the Toffees are reportedly considering a move for the 25-year-old in January in a bid to reinforce the midfield ranks at Goodison Park.
Both Idrissa Gueye and Morgan Schneiderlin have made unconvincing starts to the season and may need even greater competition for places to get back to a high level, competition Carvalho would certainly provide.
Thus, it’s a move manager Ronald Koeman, should he still be manager come the New Year, must seriously consider making in the winter.
