Southampton supporters in the Transfer Tavern were again left disappointed by their side after seeing the Saints go down 1-0 at home to Burnley on Saturday, in turn suffering their fourth Premier League defeat of the campaign.
Mauricio Pellegrino’s men went into their clash with the high-flying Clarets unbeaten in three league matches, and would have viewed a home encounter against the Lancashire-based club as an opportunity to record a fourth win of the campaign. However, they were lethargic throughout and ultimately succumbed to defeat as a Sam Vokes header nine minutes from time was enough to secure a 1-0 victory for Sean Dyche’s side, in turn moving them level on points with sixth place Arsenal and fifth place Liverpool in the Premier League.
For Southampton though, they slipped to 13th and many questions were being asked by our resident Saints fans regarding their side’s lacklustre performance, although they are likely to be encouraged by a recent report from The Daily Mirror, which suggests that the South Coast outfit are lining up a January move for former Manchester City forward Stevan Jovetic.
The 28-year-old currently plays his trade at Ligue 1 champions Monaco and has done so since the summer, although he hasn’t had things all his own way at all at the Stade Louis II having played just six times in all competitions this season, netting one goal in the process.
Yet the Montenegro international earned his move to the French club after impressing at La Liga side Sevilla last season, although English football fans will remember him chiefly from his time at City, for whom he scored 11 goals in 44 games between 2013 and 2016.
And his struggles in Monaco have reportedly alerted Pellegrino and Southampton, who are clearly on the lookout for attacking reinforcements after scoring just nine goals in 11 Premier League games this season, only four teams (Huddersfield, Bournemouth, Swansea, and Crystal Palace) have scored fewer.
But whether the Saints can indeed lure the 28-year-old away from the Ligue 1 champions in the New Year very much remains to be seen.
Landlord’s verdict: Claude Puel lost his job at Southampton over the summer for a negative style of football, which ultimately contributed to his side’s meagre tally of 41 Premier League goals.
Yet things haven’t improved greatly under new boss Mauricio Pellegrino with nine goals in 11 league matches, and as such the former Alaves manager is beginning to come under criticism from some parts of the despairing Saints faithful.
And the 46-year-old is responding by reportedly expressing an interest in Stevan Jovetic, who has endured a miserable time at Monaco since moving there in the summer having scored just once in six appearances for Leonardo Jardim’s men.
Yet the 28-year-old has shown signs at previous clubs, he scored 11 goals in 44 games for Manchester City between 2013 and 2016, that he could be exactly what Southampton need, and as such it’s a deal they have to try and complete in the New Year.
