Over the last couple of seasons Real Madrid have let go a number of top players who have gone on to be fantastic signing’s for the new clubs. Wesley Sneijder, Arjen Robben and Rafael van der Vaart have been absolute steals for Inter Milan, Bayern Munich and Tottenham respectively.
The next player likely to leave Real is Argentine midfielder Fernando Gago. A Spanish radio network is claiming Gago is looking for a way out in January. And Manchester United is interested in him.
Gago is currently just getting back to fitness after an ankle strain but will find himself behind Xabi Alonso, Sami Khedira and Lassana Diarra.
The Argentine is a holding midfield player, something United need in the absence of Owen Hargreaves. At only twenty four years old he has made one hundred and fourteen league appearances for Real in three years and has been compared to Fernando Redondo. He also has twenty nine caps for Argentina.
In January 2008 he was very close to joining Manchester City. Although he agreed personal terms, the two clubs couldn’t reach an agreement and the deal fell through.
Manchester United certainly needs some strengthening in the middle of midfield. Gago would be a good signing, but I only see it happening if he’s available on the cheap. There has been some talk of a loan deal until the end of the season, something United would be happy with as part of his salary would be paid by Madrid.
I see Gago leaving Madrid pretty soon, whether it’s United who sign him I’m not sure.
