Valued At Over £11m In 2010, What Might Arsene Offer Now?

Lazio’s Brazilian play-maker Hernanes will snub a move to Russian big-spenders Anzhi because he wants to join Arsenal reports The Mirror.  The article claims Arsenal scouts have been tracking the Brazilian international all season and that the player himself has urged Lazio to turn down advances from Anzhi and listen to offers from Arsenal.

The 26 year old has impressed since signing from Sao Paulo for a reported  £11.2m two years ago The Mirror goes on to say.  This season he has scored eight times in 29 appearances and got two assists.

In an article in The Mail it is claimed Hernanes has grown frustrated at being substituted regularly and Lazio boss Edy Reja is prepared to sell him as he is very similar in style to in-form Italy international Stefano Mauri.  Lazio are reportedly looking for an offer in the region of £16m to land the Brazilian.

It must be exciting for Arsenal fans to be linked to a young Brazilian international play-maker.  But is another midfielder really needed at the Emirates?  Even after the departures of Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri last summer, and even if Yossi Benayoun doesn’t stay beyond his loan spell, it still leaves Wenger with Arteta, Diaby, Ramsey, Wilshere, Song, Coquelin, Frimpong and Rosicky (assuming the Czech is there next season).  A multitude of riches and options for anyone.  This is not even taking into account Oxlade-Chamberlain playing deeper or players currently on loan.

It is nice that Hernanes wants to play for Arsenal at the moment but if I were Wenger I would be very wary of signing a player who gets frustrated and requests to leave because he gets substituted.  Football is a team game and a player should want whats best for the team.  If a manager decides to bring a player off then they should accept it as being best for the team, not go away crying and requesting transfers.  No one wants a ‘Tevez’ style situation and I for one could certainly not see Wenger suffering that kind of scenerio.

Another factor which doesn’t quite seem to ring true is the reported reason that Lazio have decided to let the Brazilian go, due to his similarities to Stefano Mauri.  It is true that the players have a similar attacking play-maker style of play, but Mauri is six years Hernanes’ senior at 32 years old.

To sell a 26 year old just because you have a in-form senior player seems crazy.  It would be like selling Christiano Ronaldo because you’ve got Beckham.  Being a suspicious type it leads me to think there is more to the situation than Lazio want the outside world to know.  Maybe there is more of a fall out than they are willing to admit but they obviously wouldn’t want to let interested parties know they want him gone, as they want as much as they can get for him.

For me if Wenger was to spend 16m on the Brazilian then I would expect a few departures in the summer.  I would not be surprised to see not only Benayoun let go but also Asharvin and Rosicky as well.  Neither have quite fully achieved their potential and with a seemingly endless stream of bright young players coming in each season one wonders how long Wenger will stick with them.
