The Southampton fans here in the Football Transfer Tavern are doing all they can to avoid talk of defender Virgil van Dijk’s inevitable departure this summer, but are slowly coming to terms with the fact that the Dutchman will more than likely be off.
With the 25-year-old being linked with a move to Manchester City, amongst others, this summer reports are now linking the Saints with a move for another Premier League defender.
According to The Mirror, the powers that be at St. Mary’s are interested in Tottenham defender Kevin Wimmer, who the north Londoners are happy to let go this summer.
However, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has slapped a £20m price tag on the Austrian international, more than four times that they paid to sign the 24-year-old from Cologne two years ago.
While those on the south coast, currently without a manager after sacking Claude Puel, are interested in a deal for Wimmer, they will go nowhere near Levy’s valuation and will look to land a cut-rate deal.
Our landlord is quick to give the Saints fans some hope over the whole situation, however, noting that while Van Dijk is likely to leave, a replacement for former captain Jose Fonte – who joined West Ham in January – is still needed.
Saints fans, we want to hear from you! Do you think Wimmer would be a good signing? Could he ever fill Van Dijk’s boots? Let us know in the comments below…
