Robin van Persie continued his phenomenal goalscoring run by bagging a hat-trick in Arsenal’s 7-1 destruction of Blackburn Rovers at the Emirates recently and he celebrated the feat by breaking in to the Gunners Top 10 all time leading goalscorer’s list.
The Dutchman’s treble took his overall tally to 123 goals and saw him join an illustrious list of Arsenal greats by overtaking compatriot Dennis Bergkamp who had initially held 10th place with 121.
The 7-1 scoreline was Arsene Wenger’s side’s biggest ever win at the Emirates and the Arsenal boss lauded his star striker in a post-match interview following his hat-trick heroics.
“Robin is an exceptional football player and his movement in the box should be shown at any football school,” the Frenchman said in The People’s report. “He takes advantage when you feed him in the box. He is deadly.”
Van Persie still has some way to go before he surpasses Thierry Henry at the top of the list, who has added a further 3 goals to his club record in his latest spell with the Gunners increasing his overall tally to 229 goals.
Thierry Henry – 229
Ian Wright – 185
Cliff Bastin – 178
John Radford – 149
Ted Drake – 139
Jimmy Brain – 139
Doug Lishman – 137
Joe Hulme – 125
David Jack – 124
Robin van Persie – 123
The Gooners faithful will now be hoping they can keep hold of their Dutch talisman and see him climb further up the list of all-time goalscoring greats. Van Persie’s goalscoring prowess over the last 18-months has established the Premier League’s top marksman as one of Europe’s finest.
Such form also attracts it’s admirers and the Arsenal striker has no shortage of them with rumours linking him with summer moves to the likes of La Liga heavyweights Real Madrid and Barcelona, as well as Premier League leaders Manchester City. However, both Wenger and Van Persie have since moved quickly to quash those rumours by ridiculing the supposed sources, as reported in the Metro.
Rumours will no doubt continue to circulate over the 28-year-old’s future – in the meantime, a top 4 finish is an absolute necessity if Arsenal are to have any chance of seeing their star man remain at the Emirates.
