There is nothing we like more here in the Football Transfer Tavern than a spectacular goal and the one scored by David Luiz last night to place one of Chelsea’s feet into the Europa League final was certainly of that calibre.
The Blues may not be too happy about going from champions of Europe to Europa League finalists elect but at least they can attempt to win the Super Cup again should that all come to pass!
The game against Basel may not have been one that Chelsea fans looked forward to like the Barcelona semi-final tie of last season but to their players and especially their interim manager, it is a competition there for the taking and their last chance of silverware in 2012/13.
With the score at 1-1, Brazilian international David Luiz stepped up to take a cracking free kick which not only gave the Blues a victory but also a second away goal meaning it will be harder than ever for Basel to make a comeback at Stamford Bridge now.
This may well be the last season we see players like Frank Lampard turning out for the club and whilst it will never beat the way Didier Drogba left – securing the Champions League and scoring the winning penalty in Munich, it would certainly be a high to win the only trophy the Blues have yet to land during the time Lamps has been at the club.
Take a look at the video below to relive Luiz’s stunning strike yesterday evening.
