The future of Nemanja Vidic has been of much debate over the past year and toady the Mirror reports that the Serbian will definitely leave Old Trafford this summer. The only issue they see remaining is whether he goes to La Liga or Serie A.
The imposing centre half has been tempted by the financial and lifestyle benefits of a move to a major Spanish or Italian club. The transfer of close friend Cristiano Ronaldo has acted as proof of the opportunities available to Vidic. It is also believed that Ronaldo himself has been ‘tapping up’ Vidic in an attempt to convince him of a move to Madrid.
A player of Vidic’s talent however will not go unnoticed and AC Milan have emerged as genuine rivals for Vidic’s signature. So long as Milan can match United £20 million valuation then it is believed United would prefer to sell to the Italians, and avoid Madrid taking two of Old Traffords best players in consecutive years.
Sir Alex Ferguson has accepted Vidic’s desire to leave, and feels he has adequate cover within next seasons squad. Jonny Evans has matured into a top centre half, and Rio Ferdinand and Wes Brown are experienced international defenders. The recent capture of Chris Smalling from Fulham will be seen as the long term replacement for the gap vacated by Vidic.
Any deal could also include player swaps, with both interested parties having players regularly linked with United. Struggling strikers Klass-Jan Huntelaar and Karim Benzema may be offered to United, who themselves will be looking to strengthen their strike force this summer.
Due to injury Vidic has only played 13 league games this season.
