In recent weeks Villa’s form has, to be polite, dipped slightly, and during this time clubs have appeared like vultures ready to pick off the prime pieces from the squad, and one man that has continually been linked with moves away is electric winger Ashley Young.
The wideman has been linked extensively to Manchester United as Sir Alex Ferguson looks to freshen up his squad this Summer, but there have also been reports suggested clubs such as Liverpool and Tottenham may also be interested.
Young has impressed greatly since he signed for the Midlands club from Watford and is now in his 5th season with the side, his delivery from wide areas has made him a real threat to sides playing Villa and his trickery from central areas has also been a thorn in the side of opposition teams.
His contract expires in the Summer of 2012, and it has been long suggested that he is unlikely to sign a new deal at the end of the season meaning that Villa will have to cash in to avoid losing him for nothing next year, however speaking to the Birmingham Mail, Young has offered a glimmer of hope that he may stay at the club and discuss a new deal this Summer. He recently scored Villa’s 500th home Premier League goal and said:
“I wasn’t aware of that statistic but I’m delighted to be the one to get the 500th home goal….It’s a massive milestone for the club – maybe I can go on and get the 1,000th in all Premier League games.’’.
Now I realise that he has hardly come out and publicly committed his future to the club, but this is the first glimmer of hope he has given to the Villa Park faithful. The player has stated his intention to leave contract negotiation until the end of the season repeatedly and it is for that reason that there has been so much speculation over his future, if Ashley ‘Webcam’ Young were to commit his future to Villa it would be a real sign of intent from the player and may send a message to other players at the club.
This doesn’t obviously rule out a Summer exit for the player, but it may offer a crumb of comfort for the supporters that the writing may not necessarily be on the wall for Young at Aston Villa. It doesn’t however stop the rabid rumour mill which again today is cranking out stories claiming that Liverpool and Kenny Dalglish are ready to step up their chase for the player.
This is just the latest twist in this saga, and to be honest I still see the players future away from Villa Park, but with those couple of comments there is at least a few doubts in my mind now!
