Arsenal 1-1 Brighton: Gunners’ top-four bid takes a huge hit as plucky Seagulls hold onto draw to claim a point.
On a day where Manchester United waved goodbye to their top four hopes, Arsenal failed to make their chances pay and find themselves close to completing another embarrassing domestic season.
Following Chelsea’s dominant win over Watford earlier in the day, Unai Emery knew his side needed to pull out all stops to keep the final Champions League spot in sight and they took an early lead through Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s ninth-minute penalty after Spaniard Nacho Monreal was awkwardly brought down by Alireza Jahanbakhsh.
However, instead of taking the game to Brighton, it was the Seagulls who grabbed the next goal courtesy of Glenn Murray’s second-half penalty (61) after clumsy and reckless Granit Xhaka tripped Solly March, leaving Arsenal three points behind fourth-placed Tottenham with one game left of the Premier League season remaining.
Just about everyone was poor – let us get that straight. However, Granit Xhaka really took the biscuit for us on Sunday.
The Albanian looked barely awake in the opening stages and took about ten minutes to boot up properly, we knew it was going to be a long day for him and Arsenal fans. Ironically, he did actually look one of the more promising players after his slow start, linking up with Mesut Ozil (who did well to escape criticism today) and creating chances for his teammates. But whatever positivity he brought was soon negated by the silly decision to bring down March in the area. He tried hard to make up for his error after, but the damage was already done. Another season out of Champions League football, unless they win the Europa League of course.
Is it time to go for the man who has provided precious little since joining?
