Out-of-favour Aston Villa striker, John Carew, looks like he could be swapping claret shirts as Avram Grant has lined him up as the replacement for the outgoing Carlton Cole.
The 31-year old is certainly on the down slope of his career, you have to be to have dropped behind Emile Heskey in the pecking order. Well, actually, with Gerard Houllier as manager, Lionel Messi would be on the bench behind Heskey!
Understandably, Carew has spoken out to the media back in Norway about his limited appearances and although Houllier has said he will discuss the issues that Carew has, that could well be just the precursor to the big Norwegian heading out the exit door.
He would be the perfect replacement, in terms of style of play, from West Ham’s point of view, for Carlton Cole and could well turn Messers Gold and Sullivan a very tidy profit to boot with Carew worth a fraction of the £15-20m they could recoup from the sale of the England international.
It may even be possible that it would cost them nothing to bring Carew in. As much as Houllier won’t ever publicly admit it, even he realises that Heskey, at a year older than Carew, is past his peak himself and would jump at the chance to bring in Cole at a much reduced price by letting Carew go as part of the deal.
Even Gerard Houllier can’t be that deluded to miss out on this opportunity?
