Internazionale are ready to give AVB a chance in Italy, if he fails to turn things round at Chelsea, according to a report in The Daily Star.
Chelsea dropped out of the top four this weekend, following weeks of increasing pressure which has see Villas-Boas heavily criticised. Owner Roman Abramovich has added to the growing discontent at Stamford Bridge by making daily visits to Chelsea’s Cobham training ground.
If AVB fails to qualify for the Champions League, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him leave. Abramovich takes no prisoners. Despite paying over £13 million for his managers services, failure to qualify for Europe would surely be unacceptable.
If this does occur, it seems the young manager won’t be out of work for long. Porto owner Pinto da Costa recently stated:
“If Andre Villas-Boas leaves Chelsea he’ll be the next Inter Milan boss.”
Inter currently lie fifth in Serie A, with the three-times European Cup winners struggling to qualify for next season’s competition. Current boss Claudio Ranieri has had mixed fortunes since he was appointed last September.
An eight-game winning streak, including a 1-0 win in the Derby della Madonnina had Nerazzurri fans smiling again, this run coming after an abysmal start to the season.
However Inter’s form has nosedived once more. An exit from the Coppa Italia at the hands of Napoli, paired with losses to Roma and Novara have seen Ranieri’s stock plummet at the San Siro.
So, if Ranieri fails to qualify for the Champions League, Moratti could replace him with a man who also failed to qualify for the Champions League. Two wrongs could make a right.
