Crystal Palace fans in the Transfer Tavern will have all leapt to the defence of one of their own players after he was accused of diving and will be pleased to hear what the attacker has said about it.
Wilfried Zaha has proved to be crucial to the Eagles in recent seasons, having returned from an ill-fated time at Manchester United, and is their go-to man when they need something to happen. The Ivorian has helped Palace to turn their form around at the business end of the campaign, which sees Roy Hodgson’s men just outside the relegation zone.
A number of people have accused the 25-year-old of diving and falling to the ground easily in the past, however, he has defended himself stating he receives a number of cuts and bruises on a regular basis from challenges against him.
“It doesn’t [frustrate him] anymore. I used to get annoyed or whatever,” he told the club’s official website.
“Obviously I have arguments with people on the pitch with all the emotions. I’ve done a one-two, I have gone to run, he has blocked me and I have fallen over.
“Realistically, you know you have blocked me and bundled me over. I haven’t called for a penalty but anywhere else on the pitch that is a foul, so why are you trying to pull me up and say ‘why are you diving?’, because you know anywhere else on the pitch it is a foul. That is what I don’t get.”
Zaha also defended himself against people on Twitter who claim he dives, stating that people just join in on the comments and that they have no evidence to suggest why.
“The whole penalty thing, I feel just everyone jumps on the bandwagon,” he added.
“I read stuff on Twitter, half of you lot don’t even watch me play, but you come online and say ‘he is a diver.’ Actually, watch me play and then you will see how often I get kicked.
“I don’t go off the pitch to cut myself just to act like I have been kicked.”
One of Palace’s most popular players in years, our resident Eagles are backing the Ivorian to the hilt in this fiasco and hope he’s at his very best ahead of the imminent M23 derby against bitter rivals Brighton.
Crystal Palace fans in the Tavern will be hoping Zaha is not affected by what comments are made about him and his performances, with many of the locals just looking for him to continue. The punters all realise he is one of their best players and will be expectant that he can continue to be the difference for the club as they chase Premier League survival.
