Walcott, Cesar, de Bruyne or MosesTo Recapture The Days Of Robben & Duff…

Roberto Di Matteo has been working hard this summer, bringing in new signings that will try to strengthen the teams weaknesses.

Much like every season since the departure of Arjen Robben and Damien Duff, Chelsea still have the same problem despite the new signings, a lack of width!

I was excited, and still am but in a different way, about the signing of Eden Hazard as I saw him as the teams next Arjen Robben. But whilst I have been impressed with his performances in pre-season I have been disappointed by his playing style. He is a modern day winger who likes to drift across the pitch and get involved in the game.

Whilst this is an attribute, he isn’t solving our problem. Marko Marin is similar to Hazard and with a front three of Hazard, Mata and Marin we would be playing within the width of the penalty area!

Chelsea have lacked width since the departure of Robben and Duff and since have done very little to solve the problem. Kevin De Bruyne is an out an out winger but he has gone on loan meaning Chelsea must sign a winger in my opinion.

A winger who keep width and is prepared to take players on would increase the space for Hazard and Mata to work in meaning they can be more influential. Victor Moses would be a great signing for this position as he has pace and skill to beat players but most importantly he wants to take players on.

Another option, although a little less likely, would be Theo Walcott. Now I know most people do not rate Walcott and I’m sure this will provoke some reaction from my fellow Chelsea fans, and Arsenal for that matter, but Walcott does have something to offer. He keeps width and is a great outlet with his pace, he made a lot of goals for Van Persie last season and I’m sure Fernando Torres wouldn’t mind Walcott in the Chelsea team.

All the talk lately has been about signing a right back, and yes we do need a right back, although I do not agree that Ivanovic should be used as a centre back. He gets in the team week in week out at right back and with Terry (provided he isn’t suspended), Cahill and Luiz the competition for the two centre back spots is fierce.

Cesar from Marseille seems the most likely right back to arrive at the Bridge, although watching him at the Olympics and some YouTube videos he is very good going forward but lacks defensive solidity. This is a concern, as the players ahead of him are all very attack minded and will not cover him defensively leaving us vunerable, Ivanovic offers both an attacking threat with defensive solidity.

I also feel we need another striker as back-up to Torres and Sturridge as Lukaku is almost certain to go on loan. A player who can play as a striker but is also versatile would be best which leads me back to Victor Moses. He could well be a key signing this season both out wide and as striker cover.

I yearn for the day when we recapture the days of Robben and Duff. If we can sign a winger and persuade Hazard to stay a little wider I feel our team has a much better balance and attacking threat.

For example,

Ivanovic, Cahill, Terry, Cole
Mikel, Lampard,
Moses, Mata, Hazard
