Leeds United fans in the Football Transfer Tavern have been hearing various rumours suggesting that star striker Luciano Becchio will be leaving Elland Road before the deadline. Manager Neil Warnock did little to quieten speculation yesterday after admitting he doesn’t know if the Argentinian will still be at the club after January.
Premier League outfit Wigan Athletic and Championship high flyers Hull City are thought to be interested in snapping up the in form striker who has 19 goals to his name this season.
Warnock confessed to FootballLeague.co.uk that the transfer talk has been having an negative affect on the 29-year-old’s performances in recent weeks.
“I’ve spoken to him but there’s only so much you can say,” Warnock said. “No doubt we’ll be speaking over the next 10 days to him or his agent.
“I think you haven’t got to think about hypothetical things. We want Luciano to stay and that’s our prerogative and he’s got 18 months left.
“We’re not the ones turning his head so we’ll have to wait and see what his head’s like. That’s the answer – on the field of play. Only the next couple of weeks will tell us.
“Once the deadline’s gone I’m not bothered because he’ll get down to it and be back to normal. It’s just that the heads get turned and you can’t stop that. It’s a nightmare scenario.”
Becchio has been a fan favourite at Leeds since his arrival to English football in 2008 transferring from Spanish lower league outfit Merida. He has since gone on to strike 76 goals in 190 appearances for the Yorkshire club.
