‘Waste of money’, ‘Stay well clear’ – Fans hugely underwhelmed by recent Newcastle transfer speculation

Newcastle United supporters have been particularly despondent in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side go down 1-0 at home to Bournemouth on Saturday, thus suffering a second successive Premier League defeat.

Rafa Benitez’s men went into their clash with the struggling Cherries off the back of losing 1-0 to Burnley in their previous league outing, and would have been seeking home comforts against Eddie Howe’s side given that they had lost just once at St James’ Park prior to kick-off. However, the Magpies weren’t at their best and were duly punished late on as Steve Cook’s injury-time header was enough to seal a 1-0 win for the South Coast outfit, a result which moved them out of the bottom three and instigated Newcastle’s fall to 11th.

Thus, there have been many glum Magpies supporters in the Tavern this week, with many wondering what has gone wrong for their team in recent games given that they made a hugely encouraging start to the campaign.

Nonetheless, the current international break has stimulated discussion among our resident Newcastle fans regarding their side’s possible January business, and one man they have been linked with in recent days is Fulham’s Tom Cairney.

The midfielder was outstanding for the Cottagers in helping them finish sixth in the Championship last season by bagging 12 goals and laying on 11 assists in 45 league games for the club, although they weren’t able to end their wait for a Premier League return after losing to Reading in the play-offs.

And the Scotland international was linked with a move to St James’ Park during the summer but no deal materialised, and he is once again a reported target of Benitez for the upcoming January window.

And this news has provoked quite a response from Newcastle supporters on Twitter, and it’s fair to say that they are unconvinced about a possible move for the midfielder…
