The Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern are expecting next season to get even better, although the current campaign will be tough to top. They are, of course, off to Kiev later this year to partake in the Champions League final, and it’s fair to say that most fans wouldn’t have even dreamed of going this far in Europe.
Next season, then, the natural step for the Reds will be to have a Premier League title challenge. Naturally, though, a lofty goal like that will demand only the best players, and that could be bad news for a few of Liverpool’s youngsters.
It’s no coincidence that as a team gets better, their youth production rate goes down. At Liverpool, then, alarm bells should be ringing for a few young players – and that’s particularly true for young Sheyi Ojo.
An incredibly talented attacking midfielder, Ojo has been exciting fans for a while now, but this summer, he should seriously consider leaving the club.
This season, after struggling to make a name for himself at Anfield, he was shipped out on loan to Fulham, and though he has done well, the Englishman has hardly set the world alight. In truth, you could argue that he’s found his level at the moment, and so making the jump to the Premier League next season may be tough for him. He’s got potential, of course, but he’s far from a sure thing.
He’s also unfortunate in that there isn’t really much of a space for him in the Liverpool first team. Their attack is arguably the most potent part of the team, and even beyond the likes of Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah, Klopp can turn to the likes of Adam Lallana – when he’s fit – and young Ben Woodburn, who appears to be ahead of Ojo in the pecking order.
By the time next season rolls around, Ojo will be 21-years-old, and so he needs to be playing every single week. He could go out on loan again, sure, but it’s looking tough to see a route for him into the first team at Anfield – and so perhaps a permanent departure makes more sense.
