Watford are set to battle Premier League rivals Wolves to the signing of Royal Antwerp full-back Aurelio Buta.
According to reports from Daily Mail, the 22-year-old has attracted interest from the two Premier League clubs due to his pace and his ability to get forward and put crosses in the box.
The Portuguese defender was born in Angola and made his breakthrough at Benfica before making the move to Belgium in 2017.
With Watford having an ageing squad and struggling at the back, this could be a great signing for the club.
They currently have the options of Daryl Janmaat, Kiko Femenia and Dimitri Foulquier, but the jury is still out on some of those players.
Janmaat has made a good start to the season, averaging 6.71/10 (WhoScored) from his opening six games, but is starting to age at 30. 28-year-old Femenia has had a bit of a shocking start to the season, with WhoScored’s algorithm giving him just 6.2/10 for his seven matches – the lowest out of anyone to have started more than two games. And finally, Dimitri Foulquier has averaged just 5.98 over two matches – so there is clearly room for improvement in that position.
With Watford also switching to a five at the back, they could also benefit from the 22-year-old’s attacking ability – his speed and crossing ability (referenced within the Daily Mail) could really add more threat to the Watford attack – something they have been needing considering they have scored just once in five league games.
With three options already being used at right back, Watford need to streamline their defence a bit more before going after someone else, even though they could do with another player there.
Foulquier and Femenia both have failed to impress so far, so if they can get either or both off the books and sign Buta then it would make a lot of sense.
