The Watford fans in the Transfer Tavern are worried about their recent form, having won just one of their last eleven games in the Premier League. They remain in 10th place and are in the top half of the table but sit just five points off the relegation zone now after a fast start to the season.
And this has led to the sacking of Watford manager Marco Silva.
The club confirmed on its official website that they have parted ways with Marco Silva and will be looking to make a swift appointment as they search for a new manager.
In their reasoning for this decision, Watford pointed to the fact that an “unwarranted approach” from a Premier League rival caused a distraction which led to a downturn in form.
This is believed to be Everton, who approached Silva for their vacant post after Ronald Koeman was sacked.
In an official statement on Watford’s website, the club said: “The Club is convinced the appointment of Silva was the right one and had it not been for the unwarranted approach by a Premier League rival for his services we would have continued to prosper under his leadership. The catalyst for this decision is that unwarranted approach, something which the Board believes has seen a significant deterioration in both focus and results to the point where the long-term future of Watford FC has been jeopardised.”
According to widespread media reports, Javi Gracia – who recently left Rubin Kazan – is expected to take over at Vicarage Road.
This decision is bizarre and short-sighted. Silva is going through a tough spell on the pitch and he might have had his head turned by the Everton interest but he is still the Watford manager and they needed to give him time to turn things around. Silva is rated as one of the best young managers around and Watford simply cannot continue this culture of freely sacking managers who are not performing badly.
