Watford are edging closer to seeing Brazillian forward Joao Pedro join from Fluminense.

According to Brazilian website Globo (via Sport Witness), when Fluminense and Watford had agreed the move for the 17-year-old forward, the date for the deal was left ambiguous, however, Watford warned in May that they may fancy him by this January.

The report says that the biggest chance of Pedro not joining the Hornets this January is if he is unable to get a work visa by that time – something which Watford will push to do as soon as the youngster turns 18 on September 26.

While speaking to local reporters (Yahoo), the attacker assured Brazilian fans that his mind was fully focused on Fluminense.

He said: “I feel ready because everything was done very calmly, with a lot of attention from all sides to give me this security. My family will be with me too, which is very important right now. That’s why I’m focused on Fluminense. I have nothing to worry about my arrival at Watford. The attention at this moment is full on Fluminense.”

At only 17, there is no doubt that Joao Pedro is a decent talent. Indeed, seven goals in 18 games in 2019 for Fluminense shows a potentially potent attacker on their hands.

However, it is hard to see what impact Joao Pedro will make instantly to the club, and if he’s getting regular football in Brazil, why not let him see out the season before he comes to England?

Watford have a breadth of younger, unexperienced talent available to them at the moment, but what they really need – when you consider their 18 goals conceded in six games – is better defenders.

Furthermore, Watford have a fair few options up front, including Danny Welbeck, Andre Gray, Troy Deeney, Isaac Success, Gerard Deulofeu and Ismalia Sarr – who is yet to get his first start in the league, per WhoScored.

Players such as Cucho Hernandez, Adalberto Penaranda, Jerome Sinclair and Luis Suarez are all other attacking options that haven’t been deemed as good enough for the first team this season and have duly been sent out on loan (Transfermarkt), so it seems a bit strange their rush to bring Pedro to the club.

Watford have a pretty old squad this season, with the average age being 28.1, per Transfermarkt. With that in mind, bringing a young talent in would go some way into addressing that, though the competition for places and obvious problems elsewhere would suggest the Hornets would be better focusing on other areas.
