Leeds United are very much in the mix at the top of the Championship table this season, with Thomas Christiansen’s side lying just six points shy of an automatic promotion spot.
However the Spaniard will know that his side have a long way to go if they are to finally mark their long-awaited return to the Premier League, and will look to utilise the January transfer window to ensure his side are prepared for the battle that looms over the course of the next five months. Leeds fans here in The Transfer Tavern are a lively bunch, with the West Yorkshire bunch not impartial to random outbursts of song, as they pay homage to their beloved club. Creating a wonderful atmosphere within our walls, they are always welcome, and our landlord loves nothing more than to catch up with the Yorkshire bunch when they make their way down south.
Talk over several pints centered around what Christiansen should be up to in the transfer market this month, with many suggesting a strengthening of the back line at Elland Road. Leeds have only conceded twenty-eight goals in twenty-six matches, but with this only the seventh-best record in the league, fans know this total must improve. With that a central defender was earmarked, with many looking for an experienced head with a sound knowledge of the English game. Our landlord had the perfect man in mind, and could look no further than out-of-favour Watford defender, Craig Cathcart. The former Manchester United trainee was central to the Hornets’ promotion to the Premier League, but has fallen out of favour under Marco Silva.
Just a single substitute appearance to his name in the league this term, the regular Northern Ireland international looks set for a move, and Christiansen must make sure he comes to Leeds. The 28-year-old could be the missing man needed to partner one of Pontus Jansson or Liam Cooper at the back, and the trio could certainly fill in for one another over the course of the campaign. Bring Cathcart in, and Leeds’ defensive quality will increase dramatically.
