‘We are a bunch of fools’ – Most Newcastle fans are furious about transfer development

The Newcastle fans in the Transfer Tavern really aren’t happy with a story in The Chronicle that claims Mikel Merino could be leaving the club for a fee as little as £12 million because of a release clause in his contract.

Mikel Merino signed for Newcastle last summer, initially on-loan, before meeting a clause in his loan contract that saw him make his stay on Tyneside permanent. However, when agreeing to terms on a permanent deal it seems that his representatives were keen to put a similar clause into his Newcastle contract as they had in his contract at Borussia Dortmund, and because of that, he could be on the move again with Real Sociedad interested.

Merino scored one goal and registered one assist in his debut season with the Geordies and despite suffering a back injury in October, he still managed to make 24 appearances under Rafa Benitez. The Spaniard has a big career ahead of him, with his ability to read the game, cut out opposition attacks and start moves on his own with his range of passing, it’s a shame that he was unable to play his way back into the side with the form of Jonjo Shelvey and Mo Diame keeping him on the bench.

As you can see, the fans are fuming at the fact that they could be set to lose out on Merino for such a low fee.
