The Newcastle fans in the Transfer Tavern have been reacting to their club’s on-loan striker, Aleksandar Mitrovic as he scored a second-half brace to give Serbia a 2-0 win over Nigeria last night. The hot-headed striker left St James Park on loan in January for Championship club Fulham and has scored seven goals in nine Championship appearances, giving Fulham a hope of an automatic promotion spot.
The Magpies propping our bar up are undecided on Mitrovic. The striker has no doubt got goals in him, and the Newcastle fans aren’t denying it, but his hot streak and inconsistency has cost him a spot in the Newcastle starting eleven as Rafa Benitez has opted for Dwight Gayle and Joselu to lead the line at St James Park for the majority of this season. In his half season in the Premier League this campaign, Mitrovic has managed to net once in six appearances.
Benitez may be left ruing his decision to let the Serbian go to Fulham for the second half of the season, as the man he brought in on loan to replace him, Islam Slimani, is yet to play a game in the Northeast owing to injury. Whilst the Geordies are looking more likely to achieve safety with each week that goes by, the goals that Mitrovic would’ve given the Toon still look sorely missed and many fans believe that had the 23-year-old in the team every week then they would already be mathematically safe and planning for life in the top-flight next season.
With that in mind, here’s our local Magpies’ verdict on Mirovic:

imo we'd be mathematically safe if we started Mitrovic upfront from game 1. #nufc

Can't recall a player who has ever polarised #nufc support more than Aleksander Mitrovic

Glad to see my boy alexandar mitrovic play for the first time this year against my country @ngsupereagles Even though he scored twice, he lost his cool at a point in the game. Probably why @rafabenitezweb doesn't trust him. Love to see him in an @nufc shirt again though.

Doesn’t matter which side of he Mitro camp you fall on I think it’s clear to see that he’s enjoying playing and scoring plenty too. We clearly messed up with the Slimani deal.
