Ryan Giggs will join the prestigious 1000 club today if he plays for Manchester United against Norwich City and here in the Football Transfer Tavern we have honoured the achievement by sticking this picture up on the bar.
It was 22 years ago that Giggs made his first senior appearance for the Red Devils in a match against Everton at Old Trafford. The United fans who witnessed his arrival would never have known what was to follow especially as they were following a club that hadn’t seen a title for 24 long years.
Giggs has gone on to score 168 times in his 931 United appearances with 12 Premier League titles, four FA Cups, three League Cups and two Champions League honours to boot. His 1000 senior appearances are made up of 64 for Wales while he captained Team GB in the summer to make his total 999.
Now in his 40th year, Giggs may have lost his explosive pace and curly hair but his ability to control matches and win games still remains. Consequently Sir Alex Ferguson has decided that the Welshman has another year left in him with a one-year extension offered yesterday.
Joining Peter Shilton, Graham Alexander and Tony Ford in the exclusive club deserves a fine tribute and this picture demonstrates the changing face of the United legend over the years.
