It was so close to being another special European night at Anfield on Thursday evening.
Brendan Rodgers side went into the game against Zenit St Petersburg 2-0 down from the first leg, with the usual trail of missed opportunities at one end and poor defending at the other looking costly once more.
Things got even worse for Liverpool, when Jamie Carragher of all people, making his 150th – and ultimately last – European appearance for the club, presented £32 million Brazilian forward Hulk with a clear goal scoring opportunity with a terribly under hit back pass. The Brazilian made no mistake and Liverpool had an even bigger mountain to climb.
But the Reds refused to give up, and inspired by the brilliant Luis Suarez, played their part in one of the most exciting games of the season so far.
The Uruguayan striker made it 1-1 on the night with a well struck free kick before a delightful move resulted in Joe Allen making it 2-1 before half time, setting up an enthralling second half.
And what was even more impressive was the fact Liverpool managed to do it with just three men on the pitch according to ITV, whose half time graphics revealed Liverpool had in fact suffered EIGHT red cards in a frantic 45 minutes.
Suarez scored a sensational free kick in the second half to make it 3-1 and give the Reds further hope but they fell fractionally short of one of the great European comebacks.
Still pretty impressive none the less.
