Everton supporters in the Transfer Tavern were back in high spirits over the weekend after seeing their side return to winning ways.
Ronald Koeman’s men were in the midst of a woeful run of four successive defeats heading into Saturday’s visit of AFC Bournemouth, who looked set to extend the Toffees’ misery when Josh King gave them the lead four minutes into the second half.
Nonetheless, forgotten man Oumar Niasse came off the bench to bag a timely brace to secure all three points for Koeman’s men, and there may be further good news for our resident Evertonians if a recent report from ESPN is anything to go by.
And that’s because they report that a new deal could be heading the way of influential midfielder Idrissa Gueye, who has certainly proven his worth to the Merseyside outfit since his move from Aston Villa back in 2016.
The Senegal international was unable to keep the Villans in the Premier League that year but showed all the traits of a quality midfielder, and he has since translated that into his Everton days with 44 appearances in all competitions for the Toffees, including 33 in the top-flight last term.
And with starts in all six of their Premier League games this time round as well, it’s evident that the midfielder, who turns 28 today, is a vital member of the squad at Goodison Park, and as such reports suggest that the club are moving to tie him down to a new and improved deal.
And that is news which is sure to come as a welcome boost for Evertonians, who haven’t had a great deal to cheer about in recent weeks.
Landlord’s verdict: Idrissa Gueye’s qualities as a midfielder can be measured (but shouldn’t be exclusively) by the fact that he has been neck and neck with N’Golo Kante at the top of the tackles and interceptions charts in the last two Premier League seasons.
And Everton manager Ronald Koeman is clearly aware of his capabilities by making him one of the senior central midfielders at Goodison Park, and as such the Toffees are seeking to get a new deal sorted for the Senegal international to fend off possible interest in the future.
Gueye has been excellent for Everton since moving there in 2016, and will play a big part in what they go on to achieve this season, and beyond, as well.
