Arsenal and Chelsea are continuing to track 17 year-old Spanish starlet Gerrard Deulofeu according to The Daily Mail.
The Barcelona B forward is currently in negotiations with the Catalan giants over a new contract but is stalling until he gets assurances about figuring in the first team in the near future. Deulofeu is a regular in Spain’s Under-19’s but has had limited game time for his club having only just made his first senior appearance in a 5-0 home win against Mallorca.
Once dubbed the “new Ronaldinho”, now the “new Messi”; Deulofeu has been nursed through the ranks at the Nou Camp and is one of the Spanish clubs most highly rated youngsters but Barca can’t sign him up on a senior contract until he turns 18 in March which is why he is on Arsenal and Chelsea’s radars. The London clubs have shown interest in the youngster since he was 14 years-old and both made enquiries in the summer. With Deulofeu fast approaching his 18th birthday either Premiership club may attempt to lure him away by activating the £3.75m release clause he has on his existing youth contract.
Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is now looking to invest in youth and develop their own talent rather than spending large sums of money on transfer fees. Arsenal’s youth policy is already well documented so a transfer for the Spanish star to either club would not come as a surprise.
