Wenger chases £10m-rated versatile UCL man – the future of Arsenal’s midfield?

It’s fair to say that Arsenal fans here at The Transfer Tavern have drowned their sorrows more than they’ve popped the champagne over the last twelve months.

After another season where their efforts to win the English Premier League and UEFA Champions League ended, many fans are questioning the future direction of the club, especially after they failed to even make it into the league’s top four.

Arsene Wenger has a big summer transfer window coming up and must recruit smartly or risks alienating Emirates supporters even further than he has already.

One player that Russian outlet Sports.ru say he’s targeting is CSKA Moscow midfielder Aleksandr Golovin, a player who has found consistency in the Russian top-flight this season.

The report states that the Gunners are in final negotiations for his signature at £10m.

Making 36 appearances for the club, he was a key part of the team that finished strongly in second in the Russian top-flight, also appearing six times in the UEFA Champions League.

Perhaps significantly, he has lots of versatility, featuring in five different positions for the Russian club this season both in defensive and attacking roles.

Wenger has successfully turned to youth to boost Arsenal’s fortunes in the past and at 21 years old, Golovin certainly has a bright future ahead of him.

Arsenal fans – what do you make of the speculation? Is Golovin the type of signing you’d love to make this season or should Wenger be getting the cheque book out for a marquee acquisition?
