Gael Clichy has shocked Arsenal by refusing to negotiate a new deal with the club until the season comes to an end. Clichy has not extended his current deal and is looking more and more likely to leave the Emirates for nothing this summer. Arsenal are keen to tie the defender down to a concrete deal but it would appear that Clichy is dragging his heels.
Naturally, this is a worrying turn of events for Arsene Wenger who is hoping to bolster his squad during the summer transfer window, in a bid to turn his Arsenal side into a team who can compete for 3-4 trophies a season…And then possibly win one!! In particular, Wenger is keen to recruit in the defensive area so the potential departure of Clichy is an unwelcome distraction.
In a bid to find a replacement for the French left-back, Wenger is currently considering a move for Celtic’s Honduran defender, Emilio Izaguirre. The player is also a Manchester United and Liverpool target, with £6 million being touted as the asking price. United were being linked with Izaguirre in January, and were looking to him as a possible replacement for Patrice Evra. Liverpool, with their own left-wing problems, were also considering making a bid. If he were to sign Izaguirre, Wenger would have to beat off some pretty stiff opposition from those two big boys.
Izaguirre may have his own ideas about his future. It’s said that the player fancies a trip to the Nou Camp, to play with the Catalonian giants Barcelona. Yeah….you and every other player in the world mate! His former coach, Hector Zelaya, who brought Emilio through the ranks with Honduran team Motague, told reporters that he thought Izaguirre would be a terrific signing for Barca. Though he did also concede that if the move ever came to fruition he would ‘have a heart attack.’
Didn’t Gerard Houllier say something similar at one point? Don’t worry, all you Internet police, I’m just being humorous!
Izaguirre has only been at Celtic for one season, so far making 24 appearances for the Hoops and scoring 1 goal. Wenger will be keen to tie him or Clichy down as soon as possible, but there will be a real battle for the Honduran once the season comes to an end.
