Wenger makes significant Arsenal transfer admission as January window heats up

The Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern have spent the last few hours toasting to the arrival of Henrikh Mkhitaryan. Though he had a tough time at Man Utd, the Gunners clearly recognise the quality that he has when he’s on form, and so swapping him for Alexis Sanchez – given the circumstances – was a decent bit of business.

However, the best news could be yet to come for the Gunners, at least if Arsene Wenger gets his wish.

According to Sky Sports News, Arsene Wenger has confirmed that the club are in talks with Borussia Dortmund regarding a deal for lethal forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

The Gabonese forward has proven his quality as one of the best attackers in Europe over the last few years, with his fine form in the Bundesliga helping to highlight his quality. He bagged a remarkable 31 league goals in Germany last season as he became the focal point of the Borussia Dortmund front-line.

That being said, he has been in the media for all the wrong reasons this year. He has been left out of the Dortmund squad over the last few weeks owing to disciplinary issues, and his route back into the side does not appear clear.

Arsenal, then, are seemingly keen to take advantage of that situation, and whilst Wenger failed to suggest that a deal is close, the Gunners are clearly hoping to work towards that end over the next 8 days.

Landlord’s Verdict

Off the field problems aside, Aubameyang would be a remarkable coup for Arsenal. He’s one of the best finishers and goalscorers in the world right now, and he’ll take the Gunners to the next level if he is able to continue his fine form.

That said, you can’t ignore his disciplinary issues, and so Wenger must make sure that he keeps him on the straight and narrow.

If he is able to do that, then Aubameyang is worth every penny of the likely significant fee that his signing will demand.
