Arsenal’s season had proven to be a disaster thus far, and things could be about to get even worse for manager Arsene Wenger should star man Alexis Sanchez depart for Manchester United this month.
With just the Europa League left to play for and a place in the top four slipping away with every passing defeat, victory in Europe’s secondary competition may be the Gunners’ only chance of returning to the grand stage of the European game, and Wenger could be tempted to put all of his eggs in one basket as Jose Mourinho did last year at Manchester United. However Wenger must also start to begin to plan for the future, and although he may not be there for too many more years, the Frenchman will hope to leave his beloved club in a healthy state.
Fans here in The Transfer Tavern are keen to see the rebuild begin immediately having all but given up hope this season, and with Petr Cech struggling and entering the final stages of his long career, fans told our landlord that they are keen to see a change between the posts. The Gunners faithful are adamant that their side must source a long-term replacement, and can think of nobody better than England man, Jack Butland.
The 24-year-old has performed well this semester despite conceding a flood of goals, with the Potters back line going missing more often than not, leaving the young shot-stopper extremely exposed. Butland is talented and young enough to become one of the best keepers in Europe, and could become an Arsenal legend should he make the switch and hold the gloves at The Emirates for the foreseeable future.
Battling for an England place, Butland will know that a switch to a ‘big’ club is likely to improve his chances of tying down the number one spot as his own, and would thus jump at an opportunity to head to North London in the near future.
