Arsenal supporters have been somewhat subdued in the Transfer Tavern in the last few weeks after seeing their side pick up just one win from their previous five Premier League matches, a run of form which has seen them slip to sixth in the division.
Arsene Wenger’s men lost 3-1 to Manchester United back on December 2 and since then have won just one of their succeeding four matches, a narrow 1-0 success over struggling Newcastle United at the Emirates Stadium. And although they haven’t lost any of the other three clashes, three draws against Southampton, West Ham, and most recently Liverpool have somewhat stemmed their momentum, and leaves them four points adrift of the latter in the race for the top four ahead of the Gunners’ encounter with London rivals Crystal Palace on Thursday.
Subsequently, there have been a few downbeat Arsenal fans in the Tavern in recent times, but there could be some potentially good news on the way if a recent report from talkSPORT is anything to go by, which includes some intriguing comments from manager Wenger regarding his side’s January transfer plans.
The Gunners missed out on Champions League qualification last season for the first time under the Frenchman, finishing fifth and a point behind Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool in fourth, and the pressure will be on the 68-year-old to take the North London outfit back into Europe’s elite competition.
Yet with the futures of star men Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez far from certain, January incomings may be needed at the Emirates, and Wenger himself has confirmed that he plans to be ‘busy’ in the upcoming winter window.
He said: ‘I will be busy yes.
‘Because first of all you have clubs that call you to get players on loan or to buy your players and as well I’m open-minded to any possibility to strengthen our team.’
And although these comments suggest that outgoings could well take place next month, the Frenchman appears willing to improve his squad, which is surely welcoming news to our resident Gunners fans who have seen their side underwhelm in the first half of the campaign.
Landlord’s verdict: Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger remains in opposition of the January transfer window, but this forthcoming one next month could be crucial in shaping the outlook for the Gunners’ second half of the campaign, as well as the future beyond that.
Potential outgoings include out of contract duo Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez, as well as out of favour pair Olivier Giroud and Theo Walcott, yet the Frenchman has recently confirmed that he is ‘open-minded’ to the chance of improving his side in the New Year.
And with the Gunners sixth in the Premier League and four points adrift of Liverpool in fourth, signings may be needed next month if Wenger is to return Arsenal to the Champions League.
