Sami Mokbel from the Daily Mail left punters stunned in the Football Transfer Tavern this morning after claiming that Arsenal are preparing a shock move for Manchester United winger Nani in the January transfer window.
The Portuguese international has fallen out of favour in recent weeks at Old Trafford after a reported bust up with Sir Alex Ferguson over a new contract and Mokbel suggests that Wenger is looking at a surprise swoop to reinforce his squad for the new year.
Nani’s contract doesn’t expire for another 18 months but he now believes that his future lies elsewhere and although United are not keen to lose such a key player at this stage of the season, they would like to remove his £90,000-per-week wages from their books.
The Gunners are seeking a quality winger to replace Theo Walcott whose future at the Emirates Stadium appears bleak and a £20 million bid for the United wide man could be enough to capture the 26-year-old.
Mokbel later stands on a bar stood to declare that Wenger is also looking to bring a defensive midfielder to the club and has lined up West Ham United’s Mohamed Diame as a possible option. However the 25-year-old, who has a bargain £3.5 million release clause, injured his hamstring in the 3-2 defeat to Liverpool and will miss the next three months possibly ending the speculation over his future.
