Wenger reveals Arsenal transfer priority as end of window edges closer

It’s been a very mixed start to the season for the Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern…

A last minute goal from Olivier Giroud on the opening day saved the Gunners, and the fans in the pub were feeling pretty optimistic thereafter. However, a loss to Stoke City over the weekend has brought expectations crashing down, with the Gunners looking really poor.

Indeed, the game proved that Arsenal have a long way to go if they want to compete at the top of the Premier League this season, but it doesn’t appear as though Arsene Wenger is planning to have much focus on bringing in more players, at least in the immediate future.

Speaking after Arsenal’s loss, Wenger revealed¬†via the Independent: “I expect to sell players first”, pouring cold water on the prospect of any immediate signings.

Elaborating, he said: “We have 33 players at the moment. We have too many players”.

Arsenal’s squad is built on a mix of youth and experienced players, and whilst Wenger has a good balance at present, the mere quantity of bodies means that he simply must downsize.

A big squad is important, but when there are players on big salaries that aren’t going to feature much, transfers away begin to make sense.

Landlord’s Verdict

There are a number of players within the Arsenal first team that simply won’t be given a look-in this season. Players like Gabriel and Mathieu Debuchy are on the fringes of the first team, and with so many young players demanding an oppurtunity, it makes sense to move them on.

Fortunately, Arsenal’s depth is strong, and so even the fringe players are worth a decent chunk of change, so perhaps Wenger could look to reinvest once the process of selling players is completed.
