The Arsenal fans here in the Football Transfer Tavern are just getting into their annual stage of optimism ahead of the new season, especially since the arrival of club record signing Alexandre Lacazette, who only heightened their hopes of a good season with a goal in his first game out in Sydney.
However, despite landing a deal for Lacazette after months of speculation there is still plenty of work to do in the transfer market for manager Arsene Wenger if he is serious about sorting his side’s woes out off the back of a dire campaign last season.
The Gunners have been linked with a move for the 2015/16 PFA Player of the Year, Leicester’s Riyad Mahrez as Wenger looks to overhaul his squad, however, there is some competition on the scene.
According to the Daily Mail, Italian outfit Roma – who finished a close second to Juventus in Serie A last season – have tabled a £29m offer for the Foxes’ playmaker.
While the Italians are chasing the Algerian, there is hope for Wenger yet as their opening offer is nowhere near the club’s £50m valuation of their star man.
While Mahrez is a target for Wenger, he is less of a priority than Monaco’s Thomas Lemar who the Gunners continue to chase ahead of the new season.
